Gateway to the Underworld

Brian E. McConnell, Professor of Art History

McConnell is a Registered Professional Archaeologist and has conducted fieldwork in Sicily for more than 30 years, most recently at ancient Palikè, a sanctuary of Sicily's indigenous Sikel people in southern Italy. He will explore celebrated stories from Homer’s Odyssey and Vergil’s Aeneid and their very real relation to natural wonders in the Campi Flegrei (Burning Fields) west of Naples, the Mefite near Avellino, and the Napthia Lakes and related phenomena in Sicily.
